NASA’s Mars exploration rovers, named Spirit and Opportunity, launched separately in 2003, landed three weeks apart in January 2004. They made important discoveries about the wet environments of ancient Mars, which would have been able to support microbial life. Spirit stopped communicating with Earth in March 2010 and Opportunity in June 2018.
